Black Sheep (2006)

Sheep are cute white furry animals and are harmless. But director Jonathan King changed this when he made sheep into a blood-thirsty animal in this New Zealand horror movie of 2006. Black Sheep nearly grossed $5 million at the box office in New Zealand and also nominated for Best Feature film in Narcisse Award.

The movies focus on the life of two brothers, Henry and Angus. Henry has a fear of sheep but Angus not only breeds sheep but also conduct genetic experiments that can turn them into sheep into bloodthirsty animal and there bite could turn human to sheep.

The Locals (2003)

Journey is never safe and we never know what could happen in it. This 2003 New Zealand horror movie star when two boots think of having fun and go on a road trip. They never know what lies ahead in their path. Two best friends Grant and Paul hit the road and took a shortcut when they saw two hot babes Lisa and Kelly in their fast car who are inviting them to a party. As they are partying with the babes they began to notice what creepy location and creepy locals are surrounding them. What we do in the shadows (2014)

This vampire horror-mockumentary “What We Do in the Shadows’ ‘ changed the face of horror and vampire in modern society. Although this is a horror flick, it also has a mixture of hilarious scenes where a vampire uses eBay to “do my dark bidding,” and how to use modern technology.

The movie consists of three vampires Viago, Deacon, and Vladislav who are struggling in the modern world like playing rent, get into nightclubs etc.

New Zealand co-writers/directors/stars Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi have made a drastic improvement in the horror genre. As a result, “What We Do in the Shadows” is one of the best new Zealand horror movies that will haunt you after credits.

Jack Be Nimble (1993)

One of the greatest New Zealand horror movies of the 90s. The movie floors the life journey of two siblings Jack and Dora who are abandoned by their parents as babies. Both these siblings struggle to find each other after a long time. In this movie, you’ll be seeing how one sibling lived a worse life than the other.

Directed by Garth Maxwell and featuring Alex Arquette and Sarah Smuts-Kennedy in the most horrific new Zealand movie of the 90s decade. Jack being adopted in a sadistic family, filled his life with sorrow.

Braindead (1992)

Braindead (also known as Dead Alive in North America) is a 1992 New Zealand zombie horror movie that made a huge impact on New Zealand people. This genre is so widespread that people all around the world are making these movies in the same concept.

All thanks to one of the best new Zealand director Peter Jackson( also the director of Lord of the rings) and stars like Timothy Balme, Diana Peñalver, Elizabeth Moody, and Ian Watkin. The film follows a young man life whose mother is turned into a zombie. It all starts when Vera(Lionel’s mother) visits the zoo to spy on his son with his girlfriend, accidentally bitten by a rat monkey that turns her zombie. She also managed to infect other townspeople and now it’s up to Lionel to find the cure for this mother. And if he doesn’t find the cure will he kill his own mother. Death Warmed up(1984)

Zombie movies started way before I was born, my father watched them in his time and now I am watching it and giving reviews. Zombie culture movie had long way and it is still now one of the profitable genres of this decade.

This is one of the scariest movies of New Zealand and children below 9 years old should not watch it. It is based on the life of young child Michael Tucker(Michael Hurst), who was used as a test subject to test drugs by scientist Dr. Howell (Gary Day). He was also responsible for the death of his parents and Michael takes his life mission to revenge it. On his scary journey filled with zombies, a person’s brain getting squeezed and all the blood makes it one of the new Zealand horror movies of all time.

With a nice gripping scary storyline, you’ll be always asking what other scary things are coming next. Directed by David Blyth and featuring an amazing cast make this one of the few watch scary movies of the 90s.

The Ugly (1997)

Another 90s New Zealand horror movie, that made it one list of scary movies recommended and loved by the entire New Zealand movie society. This 1997 New Zealand scary film, is one of the cult classics by director Scott Reynolds and starring Paolo Rotondo, Rebecca Hobbs. If you love movies based on serial killers, this one is for your taste. It follows a story about a psychiatrist, that determines whether the essential killer is cured or not and what motivated him to kill all those innocent people. The movie shots all to Simon, childhood memories, and does he feel any guilt for what he has done. One of the scary things that will haunt you is that, watching Simon slashes people’s throats.

Fresh Meat (2012)

The locals have the hilarious plot ever you can watch in the cinemas. This new Zealand horror movie is based on the life of a modern-day family of Māori and it is directed by Danny Mulheron. It has an amazing star cast of Temuera Morrison and Kate Elliot. The movie began when a runaway criminal, takes a hostage of the family. But they never know that the family is cannibals. In this first scene of the movie, you’ll be seeing a cut hand stored in the refrigerator for eating. The movie becomes soo hilarious and scary at the same time, when criminals became the food of the family. If you wanna what happen when a gang of criminals fight with cannibals, watch this amazing new Zealand horror-comedy movie.

Last of the Living (2009)

It is one of a scare, horrifying movie that shows blood, people getting their heads eaten, and a scary zombie. When a contagious virus is an outbreak, there must be a cure to stop this global pandemic. In this amazing thriller scary movie, the last hope of humanity is in the hands of three couch potatoes.
